missing adventure #2

what is kid-nap-ped?

a co-worker of mine had some college reunion football game thing in new orleans with his fellow classmates from crazy-go-nuts university over the holiday break. somewhere along this journey of self-discovery he met a girl. from some mid western state. they made out. here's the thing: he wants to call her, and has her cell phone number, but he can't remember her name. or more accurately, he can't remember her name, dude.

he's tried the reverse lookup phonebook thing, but no luck. he could try and call her and hopefully get a voicemail message that says, (and i'm para-judging here), "hay-ee. this is tiff'ny. leave a messige (sp?)." but if she answers, he's done for.

here's where i come in. my cell phone number doesn't have the same area code as my co-worker's. so it occurs to my co-worker that i should call her, since she'd be suspicious of any call she gets from his area code, which she has no doubt "memorized" at this point and scrawled all over her trapper keeper, next to the countless renditions of "tiff'ny+co-worker" heart doodles. hopefully, i can just get the name from her voicemail message. but if she picks up, i can plausibly claim a wrong number, and maybe squeeze a name out of the situation. having no idea how this will turn out, or how i would even begin to break the seal on "plan b: operation name-squeeze", i decide i'm in. dude.

voicemail. "hay-ee. i can't take yer call. leave a messige."

no dice at first. but the plot thickens. i get a missed call from her on my cell phone while i'm running some errands later in the evening. time to break the seal on plan b.

so i call her back. couldn't have gone better.

"hello?"

"uh...hey..um...who is...i'm not sure who this is. i got a phone call from this number on my cell phone?"

"i was returning the call i got from your number."

(ask her who she is)

"uh...wow...this is weird...who is this?"

"who's this?"

(tell her your name)

"well, uh, sorry about this confusion. by the way, my name is ted."

(awkward silence. i think at this point i'm coming across as "i am from the stars. what is your system called? will you come with me?")

"ok. well....g'bye."

i think i'm gonna tell him her name is tina.
